Keeping
Geckos should be kept in a terrarium. Its size
depends on the specie, but it's mostly between 90 - 140 l. It's important that
it is closed very well so that the animals have no possibility to pull the
cover and run away. The terrarium should have a daylight-fluorescent lamp,
because this light is pretty similar to the natural sunlight, which is very
important for the geckos. The temperature, which also depends on the specie, can
be regulated by an infrared-heating or an electric pad. Apart from that, the atmospheric
humidity must be controlled regularly and there must be enough fresh air for the
day geckos. As ground you can use bark material and flower earth, but you have
to be careful, that they aren't treated with fertilizer or other chemical stuff.
Because day geckos love climbing, you should put some bigger branches in your
terrarium. To have a pretty natural terrarium, you shouldn't forget to put some
plants in it as well (for example ivy), because day geckos lick the water
droplets from the leaves and so you don't need to put an extra water bowl in it
(but you have to spray some water in it every day). The geckos must be fed
several times a week, which depends on the specie as well as the kind of food.
Most of the species can be kept as a pair, one male and one female. Before you
buy them, you should find out if the specie you want is easy to breed or if it's
difficult. Another very important thing is, that these animals are very sensitive to
stress. There are even some species, which don't like it if there are always
people in their room and you should always remember to move slowly around them.
And you should only touch them if you need to, for example if the animal is ill.
Because of too much stress, day geckos can become ill and they may even die if
it's too much for them to stand. An interesting thing is, that they can throw
away their tail if they are in panic. The first time this happens, there will
grow another tail, which may have a different color and may be shorter than the
original one. But if this happens a second time, the gecko will lose its tail
forever.
